School Transport in State Schools is organised by the Ministry for Education and Employment. The Ministry provides school transport services to State Schools in Malta and Gozo and currently organises over 660 routes daily, serving approximately 13,000 students. School transport is a free service for all eligible students attending State Schools.
When will applications for scholastic year 2022/2023 open?
Applications for Free School Transport for students attending State Schools for the coming scholastic year 2022/2023 will open from 11th May 2022 to 15th July 2022.
Who needs to apply?
All parents/legal guardians requiring the Free State School Transport service for their children for scholastic year 2022/2023 need to apply.
How do you apply?
Renewals – Parents/Legal Guardians who applied for Free School Transport for the previous scholastic year (2021/2022) will be receiving a personalised email to apply for the coming Scholastic Year 2022/2023.
First Time Applicants – Parents/Legal Guardians requiring the free school transport service for their children for the first time for scholastic year 2022/2023 can access the online application through this link. In-order to fill in the online application you will need to use your e-ID username and password.
How do you register for an e-ID or change your password?
Every person who holds a Maltese Identity card or a Residence Card (for EU and non-EU citizens) is entitled to an e-ID account. If you never used your e-ID before please visit HERE or if you forgot your password visit HERE.
If you do not have a Maltese Identity Card or a Residence Card (for EU and non-EU citizens) you will not be able to access the online application. A manual application needs to be filled in by visiting the one-stop-shop Edu servizz.gov in Great Siege Road, Floriana or the Gozo College in Europe Street, Victoria-Gozo. Please bring along with you an official identification document (passport or ID card).
Parents/Legal guardians of students who will be making use of school transport will be informed through a personalised email sent by the Ministry for Education of the time of pick-up/drop-off, as well as the name of the pick-up/drop-off point of the respective student prior beginning of the scholastic year.

Students attending a kindergarten or primary school
- who reside within a distance of four (4) kilometres from their respective school shall not be picked up earlier than thirty (30) minutes before school starts.
- who reside further than four (4) kilometres, but less than ten (10) kilometres from their respective school, shall not be picked up earlier than forty five (45) minutes before school starts.
- are to arrive not later than five (5) minutes before the commencement of the school day, and not earlier than thirty (30) minutes before schools starts.
- shall not be picked up later than fifteen (15) minutes after school finishes.
Students attending a middle, secondary or any national school
- residing not more than eight (8) kilometres away from their respective school shall not be picked up earlier than one (1) hour before school starts.
- residing more than eight (8) kilometres away from their respective school shall not be picked up earlier than one (1) hour thirty (30) minutes before school commences.
- shall not be picked up later than thirty (30) minutes from the time their school ends.
- are to arrive not later than five (5) minutes and not earlier than one (1) hour before school starts.
Students attending Resources Centres
- At dismissal time, students shall not be picked up later than fifteen (15) minutes from the time their school ends.
The Government is financing and improving the transport service given to students attending State Schools. Parents/guardians will be kept accountable for the proper use of this free transport system and hence the following penalties apply:
- should the student use school transport for up to 75% of the school days, NO PENALTIES APPLY
- should the student use school transport for less than 75% of the school days, the student will not be entitled to free school transport service in the following scholastic year
